The word angel occurs more than 300 times in the Bible. The angels can be found in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. And based on the passages in which the angels appear, one can show that there are angels and that they have been given a wide variety of tasks. Anyone who takes the Bible seriously as God’s revelation cannot ignore the existence of angels. Angels are spoken of in the Bible as a matter of course. They are God’s creatures and have been assigned their task by God.

Angelic apparitions have occurred throughout history. Here only the apparition of the angels in Fatima should be remembered. An angel appeared to the three seers and taught them a prayer. These appearances cannot form the basis of the Church’s teaching. But they show that angels exist.

Tasks Of The Angels

The name says it all. The word angel comes from the Greek aggeloj and means: messenger. According to the meaning of the word, the task of the angels is to be messengers; the archangel Gabriel is the messenger of God. Three angels are known to us by name. These are the three archangels: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. These names, known to us as first names, also have a meaning.

Translated, the name Michael means: Who is like God? on this in the Revelation of John how Michael fights with the powers of darkness.

Gabriel means “Power of God”. It is not without reason that the Archangel Gabriel is sent to the Virgin Mary. The Archangel Raphael is reported in the Book of Tobit. There he is the companion of Tobias, the son of Tobit. The behavior of this Archangel also explains the meaning of the name Raphael: “Medicine of God”. In this way, Tobit is cured of an eye disease.

If you look up the passages in the Bible in which angels play a role, you quickly realize that the tasks of the angels should not and cannot be limited to running errands and serving Christ. In the following some further tasks of the angels will be presented.

Guardian

One of the angels’ duties is to guard the entrance to paradise. “He drove out man and placed the cherubim and the blazing flaming sword to the east of the Garden of Eden to guard the way to the tree of life.”
